Al all-green rating from EdReports and multiple ESSA certifications earned.

Our Guiding Principles

Our team of curriculum writers have carefully developed CommonLit 360 to align with four guiding principles, ensuring that each unit and lesson are designed to support the growth and success of all learners.

Students can engage with and learn rigorous, grade-level content

All students read the same authentic grade-level texts with scaffolds built in to support access without lowering the bar.

Teachers drive student outcomes

Every lesson comes with editable slide decks, teacher copies, and How-To Guides for debates and seminars so teachers spend their energy on instruction, not prep.

Deep engagement fosters deep learning

Each unit opens with discussion prompts, multimedia, and essential questions designed to spark curiosity before students even encounter the core text.

Learning is fundamentally social

Reading lessons rotate between whole-class, partner, and independent reading, and culminating tasks include presentations, debates, and peer feedback alongside traditional essays.

Coherent design delivers school-wide impact

CommonLit 360 is horizontally and vertically aligned so every grade builds meaningfully on the one before it. Each grade includes six complete units anchored in essential questions.

Units increase in rigor throughout the year as students grow their skills and independence
Units culminate in tasks that showcase student learning, including research projects and multimedia presentations
Unit scope & sequence provides teachers with pacing and facilitation guidance

8th Grade Unit 1: The Art of Suspense

Core texts, essential question, and focus skills

In this unit, core texts combine literary classics like “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allen Poe, "Lamb to the Slaughter" by Roald Dahl, and the informational article “The Psychology of Suspense.” The Essential Question is: How do authors create suspense, and why are we drawn to it?
Reading focus skills: Analyzing dialogue, development of key concepts, and development of irony and suspense
Writing focus skills: Writing a strong claim and writing an evidence-based response
Speaking and listening focus skills: Referring to evidence in discussion to build on or challenge others' ideas

Reading, writing, discussion, and media lessons

In this unit, students read full-length short stories, practice writing strong paragraphs, and watch video clips showing suspense in movies to build a bridge for deeper understanding the unit texts and literary devices. Each lesson comes with teacher copies for planning and facilitation.
Reading lessons include partner exploration, check-for-understanding, and whole-group discussion.
Writing lessons provide scaffolds like exemplars and a built in self-review process
High-interest multimedia builds context and sparks engagement with unit topics

Mid-unit cold-read assessments on unit focus skills

With our Unit Skills Assessments, students complete formative assessments with cold-read passages that highlight themes and devices taught throughout the unit.
Easy-to-assign, single period formative assessments to gauge learning progress midway through each unit
Multiple choice and written response questions aligned to unit focus skills
Immediate and actionable data on student progress to support responsive planning throughout each unit

Summative Culminating Tasks to showcase learning

The Culminating Task for 8th Grade Unit 1 is a literary analysis essay. Over the course of the year, units culminate in creative tasks like creating an advertisement justifying or opposing contact sports, and an argumentative essay about school start time that incorporates survey data and research.
Planning and drafting lessons pre-built into every unit's scope and sequence
Guided peer review supports students to take ownership of their learning and develop the ability to give and accept feedback
Teachers receive a Culminating Task examplar for every unit to support planning and grading

Loved by teachers, trusted by administrators

Get inspired by the experiences of educators who’ve seen the impact of our program.

"CommonLit is cohesive and saves time. The unit plan is already made for teachers, the pacing is done for them, the assessments are already made, and they’re all aligned. This enables teachers to focus on building their knowledge of content and pedagogy in order to be able to effectively improve instruction."

Assistant Principal
Collaborative Arts Middle School, NY

“I can say within a year and a half that we've seen a huge shift that we never thought possible with alignment within the ELA department, and we have seen performance skyrocket because of it.”

“The variety of texts that we’re able to read is a good mix. It’s highly relatable to our student population. When they’re working, it’s beautiful to watch. I love listening to them reading with each other and talking about texts and not worrying about what’s happening at home for those 80 minutes. 80 minutes is a long time, but the kids say, “wow, we only have 10 minutes left? So that’s good.”
